Video: Bryan Cranston cameos in promo for new series ‘Don’t Trust the B— in Apt. 23’
Let’s face it, since television shows have been available to watch online and DVRs became commonplace, I don’t think I’ve watched a single show live on television. Even if I’m watching it as it airs – as is the case with shows like ‘Sons of Anarchy’, ‘Breaking Bad’, and ‘ Justified’ – I also record it. And I watch the recording version, not the live version. In what has become an annoying habit to friends and family, I also start shows 15-20 minutes late simply so I can fast-forward through all the annoying commercials. I can’t tell you the last time I actually saw a commercial before this awards season.
But thank God I watched the Oscars live last Sunday, otherwise I would have missed the commercial for the new show ‘Don’t Trust the B— in Apt. 23’ starring Krysten Ritter (‘Breaking Bad’, ‘Veronica Mars’) and James Van Der Beek (I’m not even going to dignify this parentheses by listing his credits). Which means I would have missed the greatest cameo the world has ever seen.
The commercial features several former roommates of the titular character, named almost exclusively by number, talking to a camera about all the horrible things she’s done to them. And while some are funny on their own, such as Roommate # 6’s, “She told my parents I was kidnapped and used the ransom money to go to Paris,” and Roommate # 5’s, “I don’t know how she got my fingerprints on the handgun,” the greatest is the segment featured at the end of the clip in which Emmy-winner Bryan Cranston (who is popping up everywhere during his hiatus), listed as Roommate # 2, looks into the camera and says, “She makes you want to kill her.”
For those of you who have somehow managed to avoid what is perhaps the greatest show currently on television (it’s even better than ‘Mad Men’ – YEAH I SAID IT) in AMC’s ‘Breaking Bad’, the joke probably went right right over your head and you didn’t even realize how genius this cameo was. And though it pains me to spoil this for you, I’m going to. So this is the point where you stop reading if you intend on watching ‘Breaking Bad’ in the future (which you really should consider doing anyway).
In the second season of the show Cranston’s character, high school chemistry teacher turned methamphetamine cook and dealer Walter White, watches as Ritter’s character chokes to death on her own vomit after overdosing on heroin. Oh yeah, and all of this happens while she’s in bed next to her boyfriend, Walt’s surrogate son and cooking partner, Jesse Pinkman, played by the phenomenal Emmy-winner Aaron Paul.
The scene is a terrible and heartbreaking one to watch, but it makes Cranston’s cameo hilarious, and a very smart marketing move by ABC. I had no intentions of watching the show, which premieres April 11, but I will be checking out the pilot just because of its existence.
You can watch the promo below. And after you do, for the love of God, if you haven’t already, please start watching ‘Breaking Bad’.
