Don’t worry, ‘Vampire Diaries’ fans, every little thing gonna be all right
After three seasons of jaw-dropping twists, I don’t know how I’m still surprised and caught off guard when Julie Plec and the writers of ‘The Vampire Diaries’ pull a fast one on me. Seriously, guys, how does this keep happening? You’d think that with the intensity that I watch this show and with my obsessive need to analyze everything that I’d see these things coming, but I never do.
Katherine kissing Damon on Elena’s porch at the end of season one? No. Aunt Jenna dying? No way. Tyler becoming a hybrid? Nope. Alaric turning evil and then dying and then becoming a vampire and then dying again? Not even in my wildest (and saddest) dreams. The only twist that I was expecting was Elena’s death and subsequent transition to vampire and I only saw that one coming because I knew it was only a matter of time before it happened. We could only go so far and have her remain a human.
So of course I was blindsided tonight by Caroline’s epiphany that Elena is sired to Damon. Even halfway through her OH MY GOD, I’M IN LOVE WITH JOSH moment, I was still scratching my head and muttering, “Bzuh? Girl is talking nonsense. Explain, please.” It wasn’t until she started talking about the red dress that it clicked in my head. And I’m kind of embarrassed to admit that. But at the same time, I’m also completely not at all embarrassed or ashamed.
Do I wish that I could say that I saw that one coming? Of course I do, but I can’t. And I’m not certain I want to watch a show where I see every twist coming. That’s not a good show. A good show fools you, tricks you, lulls you into a false sense of security and then turns the light on and you realize that Bruce Willis was dead the whole effing time. That’s what makes a good show. And no matter what your judgmental friends say, ‘The Vampire Diaries’ is a good show. So don’t worry about not seeing this twist coming. Because we were all caught off guard tonight.
We knew that the Damon and Elena hookup was inevitable (even if I thought it would take longer than a couple of days in Mystic Falls time -which, by the way, does anyone get the feeling that time moves differently there? Hella weird place, Mystic Falls is), but I don’t think any of us could have or even would have predicted that Elena would be sired to Damon.
Looking back, the clues were all there. Damon told her she couldn’t keep anything down but human blood straight from the vein and it happened. But we chalked it up to Mystic Falls/Doppleganger Elena is Special shenanigans. Damon told her to kill Connor and she did, but we chalked that up to A) Damon being Damon and B) a newly turned vampire unable to control herself (plus the dude staked her, so I mean, let’s not pretend that he didn’t deserve it). We took all of the signs at face value because we had no reason not to. Let’s not beat ourselves up over it.
For awhile now Damon’s been a sense of comfort for Elena. He’s been her rock, her constant. He’s never let her down in the big scheme of things. Sure, he’s let her down plenty of times, but not when it counted. Not really. He’s the guy who said, “Let me be clear about something. If it comes down to you and the witch again, I will gladly let Bonnie die. I will always choose you.” And while the three people who actually like Bonnie might have been offended by that, it’s the truth. Damon has always been there for Elena. He was the person who stayed behind when Stefan joined Klaus on his cross country killing spree. He stayed and he helped her get through the pain. So there’s no real reason that we should have taken Elena being comforted by Damon in her time of need as anything other than that.
The writers were able to fool us because they’ve been building a compelling and realistic relationship between Damon and Elena for the last two plus seasons. The sire bond was not obvious to us because it wasn’t as if Elena was all of a sudden doing things that we couldn’t possibly fathom a non-sired Elena would be doing. Yes, the red dress comment tonight was a red flag, because two seconds before Damon picked the red one, Elena was adamant about the blue dress. But other than that, none of the events prior to tonight were out of place.
I know that there are probably some diehard Stelena fans who will probably disagree with me on this next point, but it’s the truth. The sire bond is not the reason Elena and Stefan broke up. Elena and Stefan broke up because Elena isn’t the same person she was as a human and with her growing feelings for Damon it was not fair of her to continue in her relationship with Stefan. And before you try to tell me that the sire bond made her have those feelings for Damon, please check yourself in to the nearest nuthouse (nuthouse = Tumblr) because that argument is completely invalid.
Elena has changed and evolved over the course of the show, and her feelings for the elder Salvatore brother have followed suit. The romance between the two characters existed long before she became a vampire, so no, the sire bond is not the reason that she and Damon had sex tonight. It might be the reason that she feels more relaxed when Damon tells her to relax, but I can tell you with 100 percent certainty that Elena’s feelings for Damon are real.
Do I think that Damon knew about the sire bond? It’s possible, and if I’m being honest, I think it’s probable that Damon knew. He might not have known about it at first, but I don’t think I’m wrong in saying that he’s known about it for a little while. Do I think that he exploited its existence to get what he wants? No. Just as Elena has evolved over the course of three plus seasons, so has Damon. In fact, Damon has probably morphed and changed more than any other character on the show. Season four Damon is not a man who would exploit the sire bond in order to get Elena. Season one Damon? Yes, I would put money on him using it to his advantage, but not the Damon of today. Damon of today wants Elena to actually choose him. He wants her to love him the way he loves her. I don’t think he’d ever be happy knowing that he tricked her into being with him. And I don’t think he’d do that to Stefan either, not after everything they’ve been through together.
Stefan and Damon’s brotherhood means a lot to Damon. Team Salvatore has come very far from the cold non-existent relationship they had in the beginning of the series. Damon, no matter how much he loves Elena, would not use the sire bond to hurt his brother. In fact, if you’ll recall, he’s the one who told Elena the truth about why Stefan was lying to her. He could have lied to her or used the sire bond to continue to erode their relationship, but he didn’t. Damon. Is. Not. That. Guy.
Now as the wise Scooby Gang once sang, “Where do we go from here?” Because what comes next is the tricky part. None of the stuff that I just talked about was tricky; it was straightforward: Elena is sired to Damon. But what does that mean exactly?
It means that more character development is on the way. If you thought Elena had made a lot of progress these past few weeks in accepting that her feelings for Damon are real and that they’re growing every day, don’t worry – you’re right. And I don’t think you have anything to worry about. This new revelation that Elena is sired to Damon does not change anything in regards to her character development. The previews for next week are most likely just an attempt at misdirection. Will Elena be pissed when she finds out about the sire bond? Uhhh, yeah, I’d put money on it. But I don’t think this bond was created as a way for the writers to back track on months of character development. If anything, it’s going to be a device that launches the story forward in terms of who Elena is and what she wants.
I think the next few episodes are crucial in terms of Damon and Elena, Damon and Stefan, and Elena and Stefan. I think Elena will want the bond broken, because that’s who she is. No one wants to be controlled or have the possibility of being controlled by anyone else, not even someone who looks as sexy as Damon Salvatore. If I were to make a prediction, I’d say that the bond will eventually be broken, but Elena will still choose Damon. Because her choosing Damon isn’t about the bond, it’s about who she is and what she feels and who she feels it for.
Will Elena question her choice? Will she be concerned that she might have acted differently had she not been sired to Damon? Maybe. I don’t see a world in which that’s not a possibility, but I don’t really think that Delena fans need to get their pitchforks ready or anything. We knew that it wouldn’t be as simple as, “Oh hey, by the way, Stefan, you have to forget about me because I’m going to go bang your bro in an hour or two.” We knew that the main love triangle wouldn’t be solved so easily. But I don’t think viewers need to be concerned that Elena’s character development will be erased. I think she will have some things to work through, but I also think that no matter what, Vampire Elena will always choose Damon. It’s the same thing as Human Elena always choosing Stefan. It’s who she is. So forget about the sire bond in this instance. Forget about it. Cause every little thing gonna be all right.
