Elijah’s back y’all! – on the ‘Vampire Diaries’ spinoff anyway
If you want me to watch your show you have to do one of three things:
1. Cast Neil Patrick Harris
2. Cast a beloved actor or actress from a show I already watch or have watched
3. Cast someone with really great hair
This afternoon The CW nailed two of the three.
TV Line has reported that Daniel Gillies, he of the perfect coif and flawless taste in suits, will in fact be joining Joseph Morgan and Phoebe Tonkin on the ‘Vampire Diaries’ spinoff. If you’ll recall, when the news first broke about the spinoff itself, I was none too thrilled with the news that there would even be a spinoff.
I enjoy Joseph Morgan too much on ‘The Vampire Diaries’ to wish him away. His character has become such an integral part of the day-to-day activities of Mystic Falls that he’s managed to weave himself not only in to the fabric of the show but also of my heart. It pains me to think he won’t always be there painting post-modern snowflakes or having a smirk-off with Damon. Don’t even get me started on who he’ll draw horses for in New Orleans; it’s been keeping me up nights ever since the news broke.
But if there was ever a way for Julie Plec and Co. to get me to sign off on the spinoff, it was this: make Daniel Gillies’ fan favorite Elijah a series regular.
It’s kind of amazing that on a show with so many wonderful and compelling characters that there is one character almost everyone can agree upon. This is especially true for a show with a fandom as divided as ‘The Vampire Diaries’. Too often we let ourselves get bogged down in the eternal fight of Damon versus Stefan, that we forget about how many great characters this show has given birth to. In addition to the Salvatores, there are fan favorites like Alaric, Lexi, Caroline and Tyler. And of course, Elijah.
With one casting decision my reservations have been all but erased. Yes, I still have plenty of questions regarding the spinoff. Like, will TVD’s rabid fanbase follow? Will the show be able to attract new fans who maybe haven’t seen TVD? Will people care about the new characters as well as the old? How will the show differentiate itself from TVD? Will it be darker? Is that even possible? Will Klaus be a compelling enough lead character? Will Rebekah follow? Will there be crossovers with TVD?
Like I said, there are a lot of questions left unanswered at this point, but by making Elijah a regular cast member, I find that I’m breathing a little easier about the impending spinoff. Elijah, being the sanest and most well-adjusted member of the Originals, is a good balance to Klaus’ maniacal villainy. I mean, Elijah is a BAMF in his own right, lest we forget this:
But he’s not as insane as Klaus, nor is he as single-minded as Klaus, and for those reasosn alone I think he’ll be able to bring more depth to the show. Without Klaus’ deep desire for a rekindled bromance with Stefan and without the rest of the Mystic Falls gang to play off, I think we’re in for a new story, one that might occasionally intersect with the old the way ‘Buffy’ and ‘Angel’ used to intersect before the former’s jump to UPN made that more difficult.
I am finally really looking forward to this spinoff and I hope the rest of you are too.
